Chichen Itza, One of the 7 Wonders

Chichen Itza was a centre of pilgrimage for the ancient Mayan people over 1000 years. This is a Mayan city, which was later significantly influenced by the Toltec civilization, between 750 and 1,200CE. It is believed to be used for religious rites.

The main attraction is the Kukulcan pyramid, Temple of warriors are among the undisputed masterpieces of Mesoamerica architecture because of their proportion, the refinement of their construction and splendour of their sculptured decorations.


Dominating Chichen Itza is the huge pyramid of Kukulcán, also known as the Castillo.

Kukulcan is a feathered snake god. The pyramid dedicated to him was designed as a calendar. The four sided pyramid has staircase on each face, each of which has 91 steps. combined with platform, this totals the 365 days of the solar year.
